Nothing says “classic” like a bourbon old fashioned, the perfect drink to highlight the rich and smooth flavour of your favourite bourbon. Created especially for our Batch 89 Reserve Bourbon Spirit Flavouring Kit, this recipe has been crafted with a rich brown sugar and vanilla syrup, transforming this classic cocktail into something truly remarkable.

Ingredients

  • 60ml Batch 89 Reserve Bourbon Spirit Flavouring Kit (pre-mixed)
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar & vanilla syrup (see recipe below)
  • 2 cups soft brown sugar (lightly packed)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 vanilla bean, split lengthways
  • 3 dashes bitters (we used Angostura Aromatic Bitters)
  • Ice
  • Orange peel to garnish
  • Cocktail cherry to garnish (we used Luxardo cherries)

Directions (for the syrup)

  1. Add the sugar and water to a medium saucepan and mix over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly.
  2. Reduce the heat and simmer until the sugar is completely dissolved – approximately 2 minutes.
  3. Add the split vanilla bean and cook for a further minute.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool completely. Pour the syrup (including the bean) into a glass bottle or jar and store in the fridge.

Directions (for the cocktail)

  1. Add the syrup and bitters to a glass.
  2. Add the ice to your glass.
  3. Add the bourbon and stir well for a minute.
  4. Express the orange peel over the glass, then drop the peel inside the glass.
  5. Drop in a cocktail cherry, and enjoy responsibly!
